Surprised, and not in a good way

A friend recommended this book to me, and usually their recommendations are great, but I hated this. I thought it was clumsily written and the story just didn't grip me - it was a real struggle to finish it and now I don't know why I bothered to be honest.

Dean Koontz - back to brilliant

I have been a Dean Koontz fan since I was 14 - the last 10 years +, unfortunatly though some of his work in the middle started to get too predictable, with each new book feeling as if you had already read it but just lately 'Odd Thomas', 'Life Expectancy' have showed me that Dean Koontz can still write a thumping good book but Velocity...... blew me out of the water like many of the other reviewers I read it in two sittings I just had to know what happened next... absolutely brilliant I would recommend it to anyone who liked a thriller or a bit of a scare!

Fast paced, sometimes gruesome thriller

When it comes to books, I either love them or hate them. It's very rare there is any middle ground. If I hate a book, I plod through the first hundred pages and generally don't tend to finish reading it. If I love a book I can't put it down and use any spare moment of time to read as much as I can. Dean Koontz's Velocity is one book I definitely loved.The story centre's around Billy Wiles, a barman who finds note on the window of his car. "If you don't take this note to the police, I will KILL a lovely blonde schoolteacher somewhere in Napa County. If you do take this note to the police, I will instead KILL an elderly woman. You have SIX hours to decide." Naturally Billy thinks it's a hoax and does nothing. The School teacher dies.There then appears another note, another death, more communications with tighter deadlines and more deaths. Billy is on his own with no where and no one to go to.It very quickly gets on with the nitty gritty of the story rather than spending half the book setting the scene making it very hard to put down. The short chapters (normally 5 or 6 pages) mean that its easy to read short sections when you get a spare five minutes, the only problem being that you find yourself wanting to read another chapter, then another and another and so on.The plot continues to twist and turn at a fast pace throughout making the book a thrilling read, I fully recommend it to anyone. I shall certainly be taking a look at Koontz's other novels in the future.
