Great story, great characters, and great science

This was the most satisfying book I've read in a long time. The author is particularly adept at explaining extremely technical and complicated concepts in a way which is easy to understand, and the main subject of the book, prion diseases, is a fascinating and underrepresented area within science.What most impressed me though was the quality of the read itself. The story takes us through so many beautiful and evocative settings and shows us characters complex and bizarre enough that they could well have been crafted by Dickens rather than based on real people. Of the many scientific books I have read this is indubitably the only one I would consider of immense literary value as well. While the discussion of the research and the implications it had both ethically and scientifically, as well as the scandals with regard to the English handling of Mad Cow, were enough to keep me in the book, I found myself staying up into the wee hours to see what would happen to the characters.For those interested in science and prions in particular this is a must read, but I would even recommend it to those who have no active interest in these things and are simply looking for a good read.
