I'm not one for crying, but I recall several 'mini' episodes of tears/welling up reading this book.Capturing an emotive topic, the loss of one's spouse/partner, Cecilia Ahern handles it beautifully, with warmth and gentleness but also humour and fun, and ... yes .. several sad breath-taking moments. She puts into words the thoughts and emotions that are so hard to explain.P.S. I Love You takes you on a journey through the eyes of Holly, in the aftermath of losing her husband, Gerry. Creating characters that you can relate to, especially Holly, means that you carry her feelings with you - she's sad, your sad; she's happy, your happy; she's lost and you feel lost. To be able to take a reader and make them feel a part of the story in this way is a great talent that few have in the way that Cecilia Ahern demonstrated in her first novel.The only other thing I would say is ... if you have seen the film and so think, 'I don't need to read the book' - think again!! I read the book not long after it's release, a few years before the film and must admit, when I saw the film I wasn't happy - I felt it turned the main character into a fickle, whimsy character who had slightly lost her mind, taking moments when she had a sense, that feeling of a presence around her and turning it into 'visions' (for want of a better word). To those involved in the film, I apologise, but it by no means did this book justice at all!

It's not often you can say the film is better than the book, but in this instance I think I've found one. I decided to read this after watching the film (which wasn't oscar-worthy but I enjoyed it) and I thought the book would be even better, especially since it had such glowing reviews. I was mistaken. The book is stilted from start to finish. Underdeveloped characters (and far too many of them), stiff dialogue, inconceivable plot devices, it just fell very flat for me.Don't get me wrong I love trashy chick-lit every now and again, something easy to read and a bit silly but this wasn't easy to read it was a chore to finish it. The premise of the story is a good one, I can understand why it was picked up by film-makers and I also understand why they changed so much of it.Ahern is full of promising ideas but does not execute them well.
