Another QMW student

Contrary to what my fellow QMW student's review states, I must say that I found the book extremely useful. If you are taking parallel computing then you will find that this book comprehensively covers all the lecture material. The lectures for the course are extremely boring, and essentially present the material in the book as a summary. Thus if you purchase this book and read it from cover to cover, you can get away with not attending lectures, as I found. If you have doubts about taking this course then let me put your mind at rest. I took this course rather apprehensively and throughout the course I understood very little about parallel computing. However, thanks to this book and past exam papers i was able to prepare near perfect exam answers. This culminated in me achieving 86% in the final exam. To this day i can honestly say i know very little about parallel computing. I think my result therefor is a testament to the quality of this book. You would be a fool not to buy this book if you are a QMW student, and an even bigger fool if you choose not to take the Parallel Computing course!

difficult to read and lots of text on irrelevent topics

"Irrelevent topics" maybe a little misleading. I find that this book did try to make an attempt at explaining some of the basis for parallel programming, but it used so many complex analogies that you ended up reading pages of it instead of what the analogy is trying to represent. These analogies come to haunt you later in the book too - so you can never use the book as a reference. Chapter 7 will use analogies from chapters 1 to 6.Lots of reading involved when at the end you dont know much about parallel programming, instead lots of analogies.The book is aimed students, so if you are a student and this book is the main book of the course - dont take that course.
